Walpole's Brands of Tomorrow

Portrait of Sophie Gallagher

Written by Sophie Gallagher

Woman in a crisp white puff-sleeve shirt and oatmeal skirt before a dark green wooden door

Walpole’s Brands of Tomorrow programme selects a handful of British and Irish luxury houses each year and gives them a year of counsel. We applied without much expectation and were, frankly, surprised.

Not praise — scrutiny

What the programme provides is a room of people who have made things, asking why you make yours that way. Most of our answers needed work.

Pattern pieces and garments on the atelier rail

The questions that landed

  • Why does a hem take that long, and who benefits from it taking that long?

  • What happens to this wardrobe if your finishing room stops?

  • You say you refuse work you cannot finish by hand. Prove it.

We could answer the first. We had not seriously considered the second. The third turned out to be the year’s actual work.

Swatches and sketches laid out for a collection review

A year later

The honest accounting arrived twelve months on, and is written up in Brands of Tomorrow: One Year On.

Every question came back to the same place: can you make it, by hand, as well as you say you can?

Fashion Historian

Sophie writes on Irish textile heritage and the mills that still run. She reads a balance sheet as closely as she reads a swatch, and considers both documents of intent.
