Why linen
Linen goes on it because linen does not mind. Wine, wax, rain, elbows — it takes all of it and washes clean.
What the table has survived
Four birthdays, one of which involved a cake left out in the rain.
A candle that went over in August and took a corner of the cloth with it.
Every dog that has ever visited this house.
Roughly two hundred dinners and one memorable argument about hems.
The cloth is still in use. The candle mark is still there. Nobody has ever commented on it.
The point
Cloth you are afraid of is cloth you do not use. We are not interested in making that. Everything in the collection is cut on that assumption.
